PSG leads Ligue 1 with 26 points from eight wins and two draws in their first 10 games. Only Reims (1-1) and Nice (1-1) managed to hold PSG to draws this season.
However, the team’s European record isn’t as successful. PSG was defeated by Arsenal (2-0) and didn’t manage to secure a victory against PSV (1-1). Luis Enrique’s team secured their only UCL win against Girona (1-0), but despite the victory, the team couldn’t perform up to expectations.
Enrique has rotated Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, Marco Asensio, and Kang-in Lee in the front three, bringing fresh dynamics to PSG’s attack. The inclusion of Willian Pacho in the starting XI has also been a game-changer on the other end of the pitch.
Presnel Kimpembe and Lucas Hernández remain out with injuries, while Gonçalo Ramos is still in recovery and won’t be available for the match against Atlético.
Recent Form | DWDWW |
Key Player to Watch | Bradley Barcola |
Team Strengths | Talented individuals in the frontline, great dribblers, cohesive XI. |
Team Weaknesses | Lack of finishing specialists, lack of sustained pressure off the ball, lack of defence in the full-backs. |
Key injuries and suspensions. | Presenel Kimpembe, Lucas Hernández, Gonçalo Ramos |
The last weeks haven’t been kind to Atletico Madrid, as the team has failed to perform at its expected level.
First, there was the Champions League fiasco against Lille, which ended in a 3-1 defeat. After that, Real Betis surprised Los Rojiblancos (1-0) because Diego Simeone’s team failed to impose its own tempo. Atlético were sluggish, almost as if they were playing without an end goal. Both defeats came unexpectedly and put the club in a difficult situation.
While Atlético did progress to the next round of the Copa Del Rey with a 2-0 win over Vic, the performance left fans uneasy. Julian Alvarez had to come on as a substitute to secure the win, which indicates the team’s struggles, even against a lower-tier opponent like Vic.
The game against Las Palmas (2-0) was a bit better but hardly impressive, especially considering that Las Palmas is a relegation candidate.
Atlético can now rejoice that Pablo Barrios is back, whereas Borja Garcés, Robin Le Normand, and Cesar Azpilicueta are still injured.
Recent Form | WLLWW |
Key Player to Watch | Antoine Griezmann |
Team Strengths | Strong wing-backs, coordinated counter-attacks in the wings, talented forwards |
Team Weaknesses | Lack of options at the back, ageing team, dysfunctional pressing |
Key injuries and suspensions. | Borjas Garcés, Robin Le Normand, Cesar Azpilicueta |
This match will be the first time the two teams meet in the Champions League. However, PSG defeated Simeone’s team in the summer of 2018 (3-2) during the ICC Cup.
Bet hereThere’s no doubt that the main battle in this match is likely between Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola.
Barcola is more physical but less talented. He frequently finds himself in promising positions, using his physicality to break down defenses.
Dembélé’s talent speaks for itself, especially since his poor goal-scoring record has recently improved. The Frenchman tormented Atletico Madrid multiple times as a Blaugrana, which could come in handy against Atlético.
For Atletico Madrid, it’s difficult not to mention Julian Alvarez. However, Pablo Barrios’ return has improved the team’s dynamics. Barrios’ absence was noticeable, as his unique style of passing allowed Atlético to skip several steps. PSG is famously weak in the midfield, which is why he edges it over Julian Alvarez.
Paris tends to struggle against deep blocks. Although Atlético doesn’t use this tactic anymore, it could be an option for the club.
Luis Enrique struggles to tear deep blocks apart, as French teams prefer to play on the counter-attack. PSG relies on the quality of its forwards but rarely controls the tempo.
However, Enrique’s influence did manage to improve PSG’s tempo, with Barcola and Dembélé now key threats, especially against Atlético’s exposed defence.
Atlético can hit on the counter, as Dembélé often fails to track back and often loses the ball. At the same time, they can rely on their strong wing-backs, Samuel Lino and Rodrigo Riquelme.
The return of Pablo Barrios opens more ideas in central channels, where Vitinha alone won’t be enough. Atlético will be looking for a slower game – while PSG will look to strike on the wings with their pacey wingers.
PSG often struggle to repeat their Ligue 1 performances in the Champions League, but they still enter the match as favourites. Atlético lacks solid defenders in the box, and it’s likely that Barcola and Dembélé will have a good time in transitions during their 1v1’s.
However, PSG’s defence often crumbles during tense moments, and it wouldn’t be surprising to some of those, as Simeone has extensive UCL experience.
Dembélé’s return to France after a controversial spell at Barcelona was ridiculed due to his poor goal-scoring record. Still, the Frenchman improved over in recent months and has now become a reference for his team. He scored PSG’s only goal against Lens in PSG’s most recent match and he’s by far the team’s most important player.
