As is typically the case with Portugal, all eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo. However, their main star at this summer’s EUROs could be Bruno Fernandes.
The attacking midfielder ended the season with Man United in excellent form, and his goal-involvement record for his national side is hugely respected. Fernandes has scored 22 goals and registered 19 assists in 65 national team appearances. That included five goal involvements at the 2022 World Cup.
Czech Republic enjoyed a fine campaign at EURO 2020, with much of their success coming due to the emergence of Patrik Schick. The striker’s form has continued since netting five goals at the tournament, and he has now scored 18 times in 37 international appearances.
At club level, he enjoyed a fine season with Bayer Leverkusen last term, netting 13 goals in 33 matches across all competitions.
Roberto Martinez’s appointment as Portugal’s boss raised eyebrows as he struggled to get the golden generation of Belgium talent over the line in multiple tournaments.
That will leave the Spaniard with questions to answer in Germany, but the initial signs are very encouraging. Portugal was brilliant throughout qualifying, scoring goals for fun. They come into the EUROs after netting nine goals already in three matches in 2024, and the biggest question in this opener is whether the Czech Republic will be able to keep them out.
Czech Republic defied expectations to reach the quarterfinal stage at EURO 2020, but they were more expansive than many gave them credit for. Their tally of six goals was their highest at the tournament since reaching the semi-finals in 2004.
However, they also allowed four goals due to the open nature of their fixtures. Czech Republic will likely need to take a more measured approach against a Portugal side with excellent talent in the final third.
Portugal have all the talent and experience within their squad to go a long way at the EUROs this summer. The nation has excellent quality in the final third, meaning that any defensive issues can be counter-balanced by finding the net at the opposite end.
Bruno Fernandes will be key in the final third of the field, but his recent form bodes well for this opener. Therefore, we could see Martinez’s team running out easy winners in this match.
Fernandes’ creativity will mean that there will be value in siding with the United skipper recording an assist. However, we like the chances of Diogo Jota to score in this opener too.
The Liverpool star could be given the nod to start the opening match with questions surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s involvement at the tournament this summer. The 27-year-old’s record for his national side is excellent after scoring 13 in 37 matches.
