Manchester City vs Plymouth Argyle Preview and Team News

Manchester City Team News

Manchester City’s Champions League season ended with a 3-1 defeat at the Bernabéu against Real Madrid. Pep Guardiola’s men struggled to defend against Carlo Ancelotti’s team in counter-attacks.

While Nico González’s first cameo seemed to bring hope for overall improvement, his profile could not fix the lack of confidence up front. Once, the team’s leader, Kevin De Bruyne, now struggles to make an impact, often sending shots into the stands.

After a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool last weekend, Manchester City are fourth in the Premier League. Most fans were optimistic despite the defeat, as the side showed more control in possession and increased confidence.

The defence remains an issue despite the inclusion of Abdukodir Khusanov, acquired in the Winter transfer. Although the defender has shown positive signs, his English proficiency hampers communication with teammates, leading to errors.

With disappointing results, both fans and players have accepted that this season will likely end without any trophies. They understand that this is a transition season and the time to rebuild the squad. Prominent figures Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gündogan could leave this Summer.

Coach Guardiola hopes Erling Haaland resumes training today, as he could be key against Tottenham. He said the Norwegian striker “feels better”, although his availability remains a hypothesis.

John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Oscar Bobb, and Rodri remain sidelined with injuries.

Manchester City predicted line-up vs Plymouth Argyle (4-2-3-1): Ortega; O’Reilly, Dias, Reis, Rico Lewis; Gündogan, Nico González; Grealish, McAtee, Savinho; Marmoush.

Plymouth Argyle Team News

The club appointed Miron Muslić on January 10 after sacking English legend Wayne Rooney. The team sits in the relegation zone. Muslić gained attention in Europe after leading Cercle Brugge to consistent qualification and multiple league titles.

Since his arrival, Plymouth eliminated Premier League leaders Liverpool from the FA Cup (1-0) and defeated 5th-placed West Brom. However, the squad remains winless in their last three fixtures, losing to Blackburn (2-0) and drawing with Luton and Cardiff.

Despite the Liverpool win, full-back Matthew Sorinola stressed that the FA Cup is not Plymouth’s biggest concern. Survival in the Championship takes precedence.

Head coach Muslić confirmed Ryan Hardie will be out until mid-March, which means he’ll not feature against Manchester City on Saturday. Brandan Galloway and Joe Edwards will also be sidelined due to injury.

Plymouth Argyle predicted line-up vs Manchester City (4-2-3-1): Hazard; Pálsson, Katić, Talovierov, Puchacz; Houghton, Randell; Szucs, Al-Hajj, Bundu; Wright.

Manchester City vs Plymouth Argyle Prediction

  • Prediction: Manchester City to win
  • Odds: 1.04 (22Bet)
  • Score Prediction: Manchester City 4-0 Plymouth Argyle

The FA Cup is Manchester City’s only chance of winning silverware this season since they’re out of the Champions League and sit fourth in the Premier League. On top of that, the guests have made it clear that this competition is not a priority, giving more importance to survival in the Championship.

The hosts’ individual quality, even with most key squad members rested, remains superior to Championship side Plymouth. They showed a better display against Liverpool with more confidence, which explains why they’re considered favourites for the tie.

Manchester City vs Plymouth Argyle Betting Tip

  • Pick: Savio Moreira de Oliveira to score
  • Odds: 2.62 (22Bet)

Throughout Manchester City’s crisis up front, Savinho has been one of the only attackers to keep playing, unafraid of losing the ball and provoking a counter-attack. This boldness earned him praise from head coach Guardiola and fans.

With Plymouth deprioritising the competition and struggling defensively, Savinho’s fearless dribbling makes him an ideal game-changer.
