There has been a major turnaround for Celta Vigo this season, with few expecting the squad to fight for European spots by the end. The club are 7th in La Liga, eleven points behind Real Betis. But what makes it more interesting is that 8th-placed Rayo Vallecano are only two points behind this weekends’ hosts.
Celta lost to Real Madrid (3-2) after a tense encounter, but are pleased with the performance. The team was 3-0 behind by the 50th minute Two goals in the second half demonstrated their determination to lose on their terms, instead of accepting a simple defeat.
Coach Giráldez admitted that Real were “out of the league,” but insisted he was “proud” of the effort in the post-match press conference.
Celta de Vigo are one of the few teams to lack defensive solidity, instead relying on powerful forwards like Iago Aspas and Borja Iglesias. The latter is likely to sign a permanent contract by the end of the season, if the club’s finances allow it.
Carl Starfelt and Jones El-Abdellaoui will remain out due to injuries.
Celta Vigo Predicted Line-up vs Sevilla (3-4-2-1): Guaita; Alonso, Lago, Rodriguez; Mingueza, Sotelo, Beltrán, Carreira; González, López; Iglesias.
While Celta de Vigo are having their best season in a while, Sevilla’s mood couldn’t differ more. The club decided to part ways with García Pimienta late in the season and appointed Joaquin Caparrós for the final few months.
They’re winless in their last five, drawing with Leganés previous weekend (2-2). The squad seemed certain of claiming the three points, but one moment of inattention allowed Leganés to create a draw as Hernández equalized with only 15 minutes before the full-time whistle.
Caparrós admitted that individual mistakes in the game frustrated him, insisting that “we have trained this”, but hopeful it can be corrected in future.
Sevilla sit in 16th place, but have nothing left to play for. They’re not in direct danger of exulsion, but must be careful as only six points separate them from the relegation zone.
Rúben Várgas, Tanguy Nianzou, and Akor Adams will be sidelined with injuries. Albert Sambi Lokonga and Diego Hormigo are waiting for medical clearance, and José Ángel Carmona is suspended.
Sevilla Predicted line-up vs Celta Vigo (4-2-3-1): Nyland; Pedrosa, Salas, Badé, Marcao; Saúl, Agoumé; Lukebakio, Fernández, Suso; Pascual.
Bet hereThe Balaidos is a difficult stadium most of the time, especially in rainy May. There could not be a worse time for Sevilla to visit the stadium. They are winless in their previous five matches.
Celta Vigo have a lot to play for – European qualification, for the first time since COVID. Sevilla have virtually nothing to aspire to, except to avoid relegation. It would be surprising to see the visitors defend well against Iglesias, as he’s had a splendid season.
Iglesias was regularly criticized during his spell at Real Betis for lacking consistency. Fans accused him of caring more about social issues (especially homophobia) instead of his professional career. He’s now started to pick arguments on social media, having had his best season in years.
With his confidence and how well he’s settled in Galicia, it’s likely he’ll score against Sevilla, who lack players that can match him in the defence.
