There will be an intriguing international friendly this week between the United States and Wales, as both teams look to build momentum ahead of major tournaments that they have coming up. But, which team will get the win?
A lot of the talk surrounding Wales this past week has focused on off-the-pitch stories, which has led to Ryan Giggs missing the upcoming three fixtures that the national team has. However, Wales will be keen to do their talking on the pitch and ensure that their results answer any doubts whether they will be able to be competitive at next summer’s European Championships.
Wales didn’t enjoy the best international break earlier in the season, as they won just one of their three fixtures. They were tore apart by England in the first of those games, before they were held in Dublin by the Republic of Ireland. Their only goal in that international break came in a 1-0 win against Bulgaria, with Jonny Williams scoring the only goal of the game. That win means that they remain in control of Group B4 in the Nations League, and they will look to go into their final two rounds of games with a win under the belts against the United States on Thursday.
The United States have an excellent group of young players in their squad at present, and that has been reflected on the recent results that they have achieved. They have scored nine goals in their last three games, which includes a 4-1 win against Canada and a 4-0 win against Cuba. There was a brace apiece for Josh Sargent and Jordan Morris in that 4-0 win against Cuba. Their most recent fixture was against Costa Rica was an impressive performance once again, as they claimed a 1-0 win. Ulysses Llanez scored the winner from the penalty spot.
This will only be the second time that Wales and the United States have met in an international fixture, with the only other meeting coming back in 2003. That was also an international friendly, with the United States running out 2-0 winners. The heroes on that day for the USA were Landon Donovan and Eddie Lewis.
The United States are certainly on an upward trajectory, and they will welcome the return of Christian Pulisic for this fixture after he has been forced to miss their most recent fixture. We expect a win for the away side.
