Villarreal firmly have their sights set on a Champions League place this season, and they will be able to build on the two-point advantage that they already have this week against Granada.
Villarreal have quietly been going under the radar in La Liga this season, as only Atletico Madrid have lost fewer game this term. Their performances have been excellent so far, and that had led to them sitting in a position of fourth in the league table. They currently have a two point advantage over Real Sociedad, but with a game in hand. However, they will be most wary of Sevilla, who are also two points behind but have two games in hand over Villarreal. Villarreal’s form is excellent coming into this fixture, as they won their last two league games. The most recent of those wins came on the 8th January against Celta Vigo, as they ran out 4-0 winners. Gerard Moreno, Moi Gomez, Fernando Nino and Dani Parejo all scored in the first-half of that commanding victory.
Granada are another side that have been going under the radar in La Liga this season, as they sit just outside the Europa League places. Finishing in the top six wouldn’t have been something that they would have been expecting this season, but if they can maintain their form, then it is something that they will be able to achieve. They have a three point difference to make up on Sevilla and Real Sociedad, but they do have a game in hand over the latter of those sides. Granada managed to record a second in in five league games last time out, as they claimed three points against Osasuna. Luis Suarez opened the scoring, before Darwin Machis made sure of the points on the stroke of half time.
Granada have a disappointing record against Villarreal in La Liga, as they haven’t won in eight. Their last win came in March 2014. The best results that they have achieved have come in the forms of draws, with the standout result of those coming last season as they claimed 4-4 draw. However, Villarreal won the return game in the same season 1-0.
Granada’s form has been inconsistent over recent weeks, which means that it will be hard to see anything other than a victory for the home side in this game.
