Two sides that are currently in the bottom half of the La Liga table meet in the league on Wednesday evening, as Villarreal continue to search for their first victory of the season.
Villarreal will certainly be disappointed with their start to the new La Liga season, as the Europa League winners from last season are yet to win a game in the league so far this campaign. However, they are also yet to lose a game, as they have picked up four straight draws to start off their 2021-22 campaign. There certainly looks to be issues in the attacking third of the pitch for Unai Emery’s side, as they have scored just twice in the early weeks of the season. Villarreal were held for the fourth straight game last weekend, as they played outa 0-0 draw against Mallorca. The travelling side were the team that were pushing for the win, as Villarreal recorded 66% of the possession. However, they managed just three shots on target and never looked like taking maximum points.
Elche have at least recorded a victory to start the new season, and should come into this in good confidence, having been unbeaten in their last three league fixtures. They picked up a first win of the new season against Getafe a few weeks ago, before claiming a second straight home draw at the weekend against Levante. Elche too the lead in the fixture through Lucas Perez, before were made to pay for a slow start to the second half, as Levante equalised ten minutes after the restart. Still, they would likely be appeased with their start to the new campaign and will be hoping to build on that this weekend.
This will only be the tenth time that Elche and Villarreal have met in all competitions in the past ten years. Four of the previous five games have been draws, with two of those coming in the Copa Del Rey. However, Elche haven’t won away from home against Villarreal in the previous four meetings.
Villarreal will be hoping to get a first win of the season in this fixture. However, the head to head record does indicate that draws have been prominent in this fixture, which could mean that the hosts could continue their sequence of draws on Wednesday evening.
