Atletico Madrid have seen their lead at the top of La Liga shortened over the past couple of weeks, and they will need to get a second league win in five outings this weekend against Villarreal.
At the end of January it looked as though it was just a question of how big Atletico’s lead at the top of La Liga would be the season. However, their performances have dipped over recent weeks, and that has seen them drop more points. That has opened the door slightly for the chasing pack in Spain, and it has allowed Real Madrid and Barcelona back into the title race. Atletico still have a three-point advantage over Real with a game in hand, but their form will be a bit of a worry. Atletico have won just once in their last four games, and come into this fixture against Villarreal without a win in two games. They have also lost their last two in all competitions. The Spanish side were very underwhelming in the Champions League in midweek against Chelsea, as their defensive approach didn’t stop the Premier League side from taking a 1-0 advantage back to Stamford Bridge.
Villarreal also need a big win this weekend, as they have been in terrible form across their last six outings in La Liga. They haven’t won during that run of games, as they have been held on five occasions. That dip in form means that their healthy advantage in the race for a Europa League place has disappeared, and they could drop out of the top six with a defeat this weekend. Villarreal did pick up a much-needed win in Europe this past weekend though, as they made it through to the next round of the Europa League with a 2-1 win against RB Salzburg.
Villarreal haven’t beaten Atletico in any of the last five meetings between the sides. The last win that they picked up game back in March 2018. Atletico have won two of the previous four. However, the last game between the sides ended in a 0-0 draw back in October.
Atletico have endured a bit of a wobble over recent weeks, but they can’t afford to drop more points this weekend. We expect them to claim a win against an out of form opposition.
