Union Berlin return to Bundesliga action following the international break on Saturday, as they host in-form Stuttgart. The hosts will be looking for a return to winning ways after dropping down the league standings at an alarming rate.
Union Berlin were looking to build on a sensational campaign this term, and the initial signs were good after winning each of their opening two matches. However, they have been unable to build on that early promise, as they have suffered five straight defeats, which has seen them drop to 13th in the standings.
At present, Union sits just two points above the relegation places, and there will be pressure on the hosts to get back on track this weekend to avoid getting sucked into a battle at the wrong end of the standings. Something will need to change at Union this weekend, as they look to end a five-game losing run. Their most recent defeat was suffered on the road against Borussia Dortmund, as they threw away a 2-1 lead before suffering a 4-2 defeat.
It has been the opposite story for Stuttgart this term, as they are riding high in the Bundesliga standings after winning six of their opening seven matches. That run of form currently sees them sit second in the overall standings, but they could move to the summit if they are able to pick up a sixth straight victory this weekend.
They have been excellent in front of goal over the early months of the season, as only Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich have scored more goals than Stuttgart. The German side were excellent once again before the international break, as they landed a 3-1 home win against Wolfsburg. Serhou Guirassy was the star on that day, as he netted a second-half hat-trick for the hosts.
Union has an excellent record against Stuttgart since their promotion to the Bundesliga, as they have avoided defeat in all six previous encounters. Over that period, Union have recorded three wins. Stuttgart have picked up just three points from a possible 18 against their rivals.
Stuttgart’s excellent start to the season is extremely challenging to overlook this weekend, but Union’s excellent head-to-head record could be a damning trend. Therefore, we could see a score draw being the most likely outcome when these two talented sides lock horns on Saturday.
