Borussia Dortmund have had a terrible seven days, as they have been forced to fire Lucien Farve after a poor run of form. They will be looking to close the gap on the sides at the top of the league on Friday night.
It has been a disappointing start to the season for Dortmund, and they may already feel that they could be out of the title race after a poor run of form. Farve lost his job as manager after winning just once in five league games, but since his departure, Dortmund have picked up a first win in three. That game came in their most recent fixture which was in midweek against Werder Bremen. Dortmund were forced to battle in that game, and finally were able to score the winner with ten minutes remaining through Marco Reus. Raphael Guerreiro had opened the scoring for Dortmund after just 12 minutes before Bremen struck back before half time. This could be a much tougher task on Friday night, as Union Berlin have been in decent form so far this season.
Union Berlin ended the 2019-20 season in disappointing fashion, as they continued to drop down the league table at an alarming rate. However, they have started this season in excellent form, which is similar to how they started the campaign last term. Union have won four of their 12 games this season, and have lost just twice, which is fewer than Dortmund. Union have struggled over recent weeks though, as they haven’t won in four league games. They have drew three of these games, which includes their most recent game. Union were held 2-2 on Tuesday night against Stuttgart, with two late goals from Stuttgart inside the final minutes denying Union all three points. Marvin Friedrich and Taiwo Awoniyi scored the goals for the travelling side in the draw.
Union Berlin have only ever beaten Dortmund on one occasion, and that came in this fixture last season. Union claimed a famous 3-1 on that occasion. However, Dortmund gained revenge later in the season by winning 5-0.
Dortmund are a hard side to support at the moment, as their form has been inconsistent to say the least. Union have excelled so far in the Bundesliga, and we could see them getting a draw on Friday night.
