There will be an interesting fixture in the Europa Conference League playoff round on Thursday, as Fiorentina look to make their advantage from the first leg count as they return to the Netherlands. Twente remain in the tie, but they were 2-1 losers in the first leg in Italy last week.
This looks set to be a very interesting fixture between Fiorentina and Twente on Thursday, and both sides will believe that they can still make it through to the Europa Conference League group stages. However, the current advantage is with Fiorentina, who were 2-1 winners in their home first leg last week.
The Italian side started very quickly in the opening leg, as they went ahead after just two minutes through Nicolas Gonzalez. The advantage was doubled just after the half an hour mark, as Arthur Cabral scored the second goal in the game.
Twente offered very little in the attacking third throughout that opening leg, but they were handed a lifeline with just under half an hour remaining, Vaclac Cerny scored what could prove to be a very crucial goal in the context of the tie.
However, the Dutch side were slightly disappointing in the first leg, as they recorded just five shots, and hit the target on one occasion. But, they have already showed their attacking quality in this competition in home fixtures, as they hammered Cukaricki 4-1 in the previous round.
Meanwhile, Fiorentina couldn’t build on the win that they achieved in the Europa Conference League in their following domestic fixture. The Italian side were held to a 0-0 draw by Empoli in Serie A on Sunday afternoon.
Last week’s fixture between the two sides was the first time that they have clashed in a professional fixture. Meanwhile, Fiorentina have never lost in the Europa Conference League. However, the Italian side has won just once in their previous five meetings against Dutch opposition, with that victory coming in the first leg last week.
Twente will have home advantage for the second leg, and the first goal in the game looks to be the most important one. However, it’s hard to get away from the quality that the Italian side has across the pitch, which means that we could see them sealing a 1-0 win to book their spot in the group stage.
