There will be a massive game in Group E on Friday afternoon, as Sweden and Slovakia meet at the Krestovsky Stadium. Sweden will be looking to get a first win, while Slovakia will be looking to put on foot in the next round.
Slovakia have taken a surprise stranglehold on Group E at EURO 2020, as they were the only nation to have picked up a win in the opening round of games. It was the first shock result of the tournament, as Slovakia beat Robert Lewandowski’s 2-1. It was an excellent performance by the Slovakians on that opening day.
They scored the winner with 20 minutes remaining, as Milan Skriniar scored an excellent half volley. In the end, they were able to hold on comfortably, despite Poland having 17 shots. They were defensively solid in the closing stages, as they cut out the Lewandowski supply line. Slovakia ended the game with two shots on target, but they were certainly one of the most eye-catching surprise packages over the opening week.
Sweden would have been very pleased with their opening night result, as they held on to claim a 0-0 draw against Spain. Many experts were critical of the Swedish approach in that game, but the Swedes actually had the better of the chances and should have probably snatched the three points. Marcus Berg missed a clear opportunity in the closing stages of that game, which would have put Sweden on the brink of qualification in the group. It could now be a tense close to the group stage, as they will need to get at least one win from fixtures against Slovakia and Poland.
Sweden have an excellent record against Slovakia in the head-to-head meetings between the nations. Sweden are unbeaten in five previous meetings, while they have claimed three wins. The two nations have met on two occasions in the past four years, with both meetings coming in international friendlies. The most recent fixture saw the nations play out a 1-1 draw.
Sweden defended excellently in their opening game, while the same can also be said about Slovakia. This could be a tense game between the nations, and neither side will be looking to give anything away. For that reason, the draw could be the bet to make.
