A big game will take place in Group F of EURO qualification on Monday evening, as two of the contenders for a top two finish will clash in Stockholm. Sweden will have the home advantage as they take on Azerbaijan.
Sweden will be among the leading contenders to qualify from Group F, but they will need to hit the ground running after a disappointing year of performances in 2022. The Swedes have qualified for each of the six EUROs, including in 2020 where they reached the round of 16 stage. Sweden managed to book their spot in the previous edition of the tournament after winning six of their ten matches, while they suffered just a single defeat.
However, the last couple of years have been very concerning for the national team, as they failed to reach the World Cup last year, and were also relegated to Nations League Division C for the first time. In that Nations League campaign. They picked up just a single victory and they suffered four defeats. But, they may have turned a corner after going five without defeat coming into this international break.
Azerbaijan is yet to qualify for a major tournament in their history, despite the fact that they held matches during EURO 2020. However, they have won just six from 68 EURO qualifiers throughout their history, and have scored just 41 goals to this point.
Their performances last year were encouraging, as they picked up three wins from six matches in Nations League Division C. Meanwhile, they come into this international break with some solid form behind them after winning their previous five international matches. However, it’s likely that the two opening matches in Group F could determine whether they have improved enough to play a key role.
Sweden has claimed victories in the only two previous meetings between these sides. The most recent clash came back in October 2001, with Sweden claiming a 3-0 win in Stockholm.
Sweden’s form is a huge concern coming into this international break, and this will be a good test as to how far their standards have dipped. However, while we don’t expect it to be the most dominant showing, we still expect Sweden to get over the line and pick up maximum points in Stockholm.
