One of the closest groups in the Europa League this term will be Group D, as all four teams involved will feel as though they have a chance at progression. That will mean that there will be huge stakes on this opening night fixture between Standard Liege and Rangers on Thursday.
There is a confidence about Rangers this season that has been missing for many years, and they will be optimistic about building on their progressive performances from last season’s competition. Steven Gerrard’s side were eventually knocked out last term by Bayer Leverkusen in the quarterfinals, and they will be hoping for a repeat performance again.
They couldn’t come into this match in much better form, as they have won nine of their eleven games in the SPL this season. Gers are also yet to lose, and they have won their last three. Defensively, they have been excellent as they have conceded just three goals in Scotland this term. Gers will come into this game after winning the Old Firm derby on Saturday, as they ran out 2-0 winners against local rivals Celtic. Connor Goldson scored both goals in that dominant win for Gerrard’s side.
Standard Liege are starting to look back to their best this season, but they still find themselves in fourth place in the Pro League in Belgium. They reached the group stages of the Europa League after beating Fehervar in the playoff round last time out. Selim Amallah scored twice in the final 13 minutes to secure the 3-1 win on that occasion. However, they come into this opening Europa League fixture having drawn in their last game against Club Brugge. Nicolas Gavory scored in the 93rd minute to salvage a point from that fixture.
The Gers will be without Kemar Roofe, who has a calf injury. Meanwhile, Nikola Katic will also be missing for Rangers for this fixture as he is recovering from knee surgery. Standard Liege will have a fully fit squad available for this opening Europa League match.
The confidence that Rangers would have taken from their success in the Old Firm can’t be understated, as they will use that to push on for the next couple of weeks. Liege will present a big test for Rangers, but we still expect them to get the win.
