Simba and Singida Make Winning Starts in CAF Continental Campaigns

Tanzania's two biggest clubs opened their African campaigns with wins away from home. Simba SC and Singida Black Stars both return with first-leg advantages.

Simba SC Edge Mighty Wanderers in Malawi

Simba edged Malawi's Mighty Wanderers 1-0. The match was played at Bingu National Stadium in the CAF Champions League first preliminary round.

Attacking midfielder Anicet Oura scored the only goal. He struck in the 65th minute after a long ball from goalkeeper Djibrilla Kassali.

Simba created several other chances during the match. Some shots went wide. Others were saved by the Mighty Wanderers goalkeeper.

That means Simba now need just a draw at home to advance. The return leg takes place at Azam Complex on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 pm.

Mighty Wanderers must win in Tanzania to stay alive in the competition. Simba, however, will be wary of complacency. The winner faces either Cameroon's Colombe Sportive or Mali's Stade Malien next.

Singida Black Stars Thrash Al Ghazala 7-1 in Juba

Singida Black Stars had a far more emphatic night. They thrashed South Sudan's Al Ghazala 7-1 in Juba. The result came in the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round.

Striker Matthew Tegris Momanyi was the standout performer. He scored a first-half hat-trick, netting in the 20th, 23rd, and 32nd minutes. Shekhan Khamis added a fourth goal just before the break. Singida went into halftime leading 4-0.

The scoring continued after the interval. Jonathan Sowah found the net twice, in the 63rd and 90th minutes. Henry David also got on the scoresheet in the 85th minute.

Al Ghazala managed one consolation goal in the second half. It did little to change the outcome of a one-sided tie.

The seven-goal margin gives Singida a near-unassailable lead. The return leg is set for September 13. Should they progress, Singida would face the winner between Sudan's Al Ahli Madani and Kenya's Tusker.

This is only Singida's second season in continental competition. A group-stage appearance would rank among the club's best results in recent African football history.

Both Tanzanian sides now shift focus to their second legs. Simba want to finish the job in front of home supporters. Singida travel with a healthy cushion and greater confidence.
