It has been a disappointing couple of weeks for Sevilla, but they have the opportunity to get back to winning ways this weekend against Real Betis.
In the space of two weeks, Sevilla’s season has effectively fallen apart. They have been knocked out of both the Champions League and the Copa del Rey by Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona respectively, while their La Liga form has also opened the door for the chasing pack to close the difference. Real Sociedad and Real Betis are the two nearest contenders to them for their fourth spot in the league, and defeat this weekend could see Sociedad move into the top-four of the standings. Sevilla’s form has been negatively impacted by the fixture congestion that they have needed to endure, as they have lost their last two. However, the number of games that they have needed to play is no excuse, as every side have the same problem in this unusual season. Sevilla’s most recent league defeat was their most disappointing, as they lost 2-1 on the road to Elche.
Real Betis will be aware that this is a huge opportunity for them this weekend, as they could close to within three points of Sevilla should they pick up the win on the road. They will be confident of doing that, as they have been in excellent form over recent weeks. Betis are on a hot-streak at present, as they have won their last four games. No side in La Liga can match that winning run, while they have also lost just once in their last six. Betis showed their character last time out against Alaves, as they came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2. Borja Iglesias scored twice in the win, while Joaquin also found the back of the net.
Both Betis and Sevilla have recorded multiple wins against each other over the past couple of years. Sevilla hold the narrow advantage, as they have won three times in the past seven, while Betis have won twice. There have also been two draws, which includes the 1-1 from earlier in the season.
It could be argued that this is actually the biggest game in La Liga this weekend, as it is huge for both teams and their chances of Champions League football. Sevilla’s recent terrible run of form is hard to avoid, which means that we believe the away side will get the win.
