The top two at this very early stage of qualification will lock horns in the second round of fixtures in Group A. Scotland will have the home advantage on Tuesday, as they look to record a shock victory against Spain.
The two nations that currently sit in the qualifying spots after a round of fixtures in Group A will clash on Tuesday. Spain remains the solid favourites to top the group standings, as they were excellent in their first match under Luis de la Fuente over the weekend. The three-time European champions certainly appear to be in better condition than they were at the World Cup based on that showing.
The Spanish wasted no time in taking the lead, as Dani Olmo fired the hosts ahead after just 13 minutes. However, it was debut boy Joselu that made the headlines, as he scored his first two goals for his nation in the final seven minutes. It was a dominant display by Spain, as they could have scored more if they wasn’t so wasteful in front of goal.
Scotland currently sits second in the Group A standings, and that is a position that they would likely be delighted to finish in at the end of qualification. They will be looking to reach a second straight edition of the EUROs for just the second time in their history.
The Scots were extremely professional in their opening match of qualifying, as they recorded a straightforward 3-0 home win against Cyprus. Scott McTominay was in excellent form in front of goal, as the Manchester United star netted a brace in the final ten minutes. The only other goal for Scotland was netted after 21 minutes by John McGinn.
Spain has won six of the previous 13 meetings between the two nations. That includes a run of two straight victories. Scotland’s last win against Spain was recorded at the 1984 World Cup, meaning that they come into this qualifier having failed to beat Spain in their previous five attempts.
Scotland’s terrible record against Spain is a huge concern coming into this fixture. However, their home advantage could be a key consideration. We could see Scotland raising their game against the Spanish this week, and that may be enough to see them pick up a famous point.
