Attention turns back to the top of the Serie A standings this weekend, as Napoli return to action on Saturday. The league-leaders will be looking to record a third straight win, while Salernitana will be bidding to end a run of four defeats in five.
Napoli remain the team to catch in Serie A, but they are showing no signs of stopping on their relentless charge to the league title. The Italian giants sit nine clear at the top of the standings, as they have bounced back extremely well after suffering their first defeat of the season. Since then, they have won each of their previous two.
Their performance in the previous round of fixtures was arguably their best of the campaign, as they landed a massive 5-1 home win against Juventus. Victor Osimhen scored twice in that success, as Napoli blew the Old Lady away. However, the team from Naples will need to bounce back after they were dumped out of the Coppa Italia in midweek by Cremonese.
Salernitana will have the home advantage on Saturday, as they look for a vital point or three to move clear of the drop zone. At present, they sit 16th in the standings, but they have a comfortable cushion of nine points over the bottom three. But, their recent form has been slightly underwhelming, as they have lost four of their previous five.
This fixture could come at an extremely bad time for the hosts, as they were blown away on their travels last week by Atalanta. The European chasing hopes scored eight against Salernitana, with the only efforts being netted by the visitors coming from Boulaye Dia and Hans Nicolussi. They will need to be much more defensively solid this weekend.
Napoli achieved the league double over Salernitana last season, which included a 1-0 win in this exact fixture. Those were the first Serie A meetings between these two sides since the 1947-48 season. In the 40s, both fixtures played between the sides ended in draws.
Napoli look well placed to bounce back following their early exit in the Coppa Italia in mid-week. Salernitana were extremely poor defensively last weekend, and while we expect them to improve, we still could see Napoli winning this game 2-0 on the road.
