Eintracht Frankfurt’s disappointing start to the 2021-22 season continued in Europe a couple of weeks ago, as they were held on matchday one in the Europa League. They will be looking for a morale boosting victory in the same competition on Thursday evening against Royal Antwerp.
The players that Frankfurt have lost over the summer months has certainly had a detrimental impact on their performances so far this season. They have struggled to put together a run of wins in the early weeks of the Bundesliga season, as they sit in 14th place. They have been held in both of their last two fixtures against Wolfsburg and Koln, drawing 1-1 in both occasions. That record of 1-1 draws also extends to their last four in all competitions, as they also picked up the same result on matchday one against Fenerbache. Despite having home advantage in that fixture, the Turkish visitors had many of the better chances in the game, and Frankfurt needed to come from behind to take a point. Sam Lammers scored the tying goal just before the break, but the German side couldn’t kick on and find a winner in the second period.
Royal Antwerp have a mountain to climb if they are to reach the next stage of the Europa League this season, as they were beaten in their first outing in the competition two weeks ago by Greek side Olympiacos. They may have thought that they did enough to get a point in that fixture, as they levelled the scores late in the game through Mbwana Samatta. However, Olympiacos scored the winner with just three minutes left to play. To make matters worse for the visitors, they also saw Jelle Bataille sent off in the first minute of injury time.
It will be a first competitive meeting between the two sides on Thursday evening. The hosts have picked up just two victories in their last eight against teams from Germany. Meanwhile, Frankfurt have only won once again Belgian opposition in their last six.
Frankfurt need some good luck to turn their season around, as they have started very slowly. They should get the win here in Belgium though, as they have the most experienced players and better quality in key areas of the field.
