Romania has put down an early marker in Group I, and they will be looking to continue their solid form with a second straight victory in qualification when they take on Belarus on Tuesday.
Group I looks set to be a wide-open race for the second spot. Switzerland appears to be the class in the qualifying group, but four of the nations behind the country are very evenly matched. Romania is among the nations in the hunt for that second position, as they aim to reach the EUROs for the second time in three editions.
Romania has often managed to reach the major tournament, having competed at the EUROs on five occasions. However, they missed out on EURO 2020 after falling at the playoff stage. They appeared competitive in the Nations League last year, as they finished with two wins from six matches. They kicked off their Group I campaign with a straightforward success over the weekend, as they registered a 2-0 win over Andorra. Dennis Man opened the scoring in the first half, before Denis Alibec added a second early after the restart.
Qualifying for major tournaments have been an issue for Belarus throughout their international history. That was evident as they attempted to reach the previous edition of the World Cup, as they finished bottom of the standings after winning just once in eight matches.
They came into qualification after finishing bottom of the Division C3 Nations League group, and things didn’t get much better in their Group I opener against Switzerland. Belarus was easily beaten by the talented Swiss, conceding five in their home match. The hosts managed just a single shot on target, but the game was effectively over after they trailed 3-0 at the break.
Romania hasn’t lost in six previous meetings against Belarus. Over that period, they have registered four victories. The most recent of their wins was secured in November 2020 by a 5-3 scoreline. The best recent result Belarus has achieved against Romania was a 2-2 draw in October 2011.
Belarus already appears to be the pick to finish bottom of the Group I standings. We struggle to see them enjoying too much joy against Romania in this second round of fixtures. We expect the hosts to record a straightforward 2-0 win in front of their home fans.
