Many expected Group B to go down to the wire, and that is exactly what has happened. Monaco have already reached the round of 16 as group winners, but second spot is yet to be decided.
PSV and Real Sociedad will have a huge fixture this week, as the side that will be reaching the preliminary knockout round of the Europa League this season will be decided. Whichever team fails to win this week will drop into the Europa Conference League in the new year.
PSV currently have the advantage in this match-up, as they will be aware that anything other than a defeat will see them finish in second place in the group. The Dutch side have been fairly impressive throughout the Europa League this season, as they have lost one just one occasion in the five games that they have played.
Meanwhile, they have won on two occasions, and are the top-scoring team in Group B. PSV took a huge stride towards finishing second in the group in their last fixture, as they beat Sturm Graz 2-0 at home. Carlos Vinicius scored the opening goal, before Bruma made sure of the points by firing home ten minutes into the second period.
Real Sociedad will have home advantage this week, and will be aware that this is a must-win game if they are to make it through to the next round of the Europa League. The Spanish side enjoyed a fine run in the competition last season, but could be condemned to the Europa Conference League if they fail to win this fixture on Thursday.
Sociedad have six points from the five games that they have played, which is two fewer than the tally picked up by PSV. The Spanish side were beaten 2-1 by Monaco in their last outing in the competition a couple of weeks ago.
Sociedad and PSV’s first ever meeting in a competitive competition came earlier in the campaign. On that occasion, Sociedad managed to secure a 2-2 draw on the road against PSV. However, the Dutch side picked up victory on their last trip to Spain, as they beat Granada last season.
PSV will be aware that anything other than defeat will see them finish second in the group. We can see them getting the result that they need, but it could be a score draw like the first meeting between the two.
