RB Leipzig kick off their 2022 campaign in an unfamiliar position, as they are located in the bottom half of the standings. Meanwhile, Mainz should be confident coming into this fixture as they are a place ahead of their rivals, and could move into the top six with a victory.
The second half of the season must be better from an RB Leipzig standpoint, as they look to get back in contention for a place in Europe next season. Leipzig find themselves in the bottom half of the standings as the season resumes, and are six points away from fourth place Bayer Leverkusen.
Domenico Tedesco has been in charge at Leipzig since the start of December, but it’s fair to say that he hasn’t got off to the best of starts. He has won once in three games to this point, with that victory coming in his first game in charge against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Since then, Leipzig are winless in two, and suffered a seventh defeat of the season in their last fixture against Arminia before the turn of the year. Something will need to change at Leipzig in the second half of the season if they are to finish in a Champions League position this season.
It has been a different story in the first half of the season for Mainz, as they have impressed. They are firmly in the hunt for a European place this season, as they sit just three points behind their local rivals Eintracht Frankfurt. A European challenge would have been just a pipedream at the beginning of the season, but if they maintain their form, they could achieve just that.
However, they will need to rediscover their consistency, as they have lost two of their last three games. Their most recent defeat came before the winter break, as Mainz were beaten 1-0 by Frankfurt away from home.
Mainz have done well in this fixture in the past 12 months, as they beat Leipzig in both meetings in 2021. Both fixtures came in Mainz, with the hosts winning the most recent fixture 1-0 in August. Leipzig won the last game at the Red Bull Arena 3-1 in September 2020.
Leipzig are yet to really get going in the Bundesliga this season, and this could be a huge game in terms of their trajectory in the second half of the campaign. The hosts should get the win here, as they finally get their season going again under Tedesco.
