The race for Champions League football in the Bundesliga this term is one of the most compelling battles. Two sides in that particular battle meet in the league on Friday evening, with the winning side set to start the Saturday action in the top four in the standings.
It has been a slow burning season for RB Leipzig, but there has been enough evidence over recent weeks to suggest that they look well positioned to battle for a place in the Champions League throughout the second half of the campaign. However, Leipzig will need to bounce back on Friday after seeing their three-match winning run brought to an end.
Leipzig had won their last four in all competitions before a trip to the Allianz Arena last weekend. Despite giving a great account of themselves, Domenico Tedasco’s side were eventually beaten 3-2 by Bayern Munich. Andre Silva and Chirstopher Nkunku scored the goals for Leipzig, but the winning goal for Bayern came in unfortunate fashion as Josko Gvardiol put the ball into his own net.
FC Köln are still holding onto their place in the European spots at this stage of the campaign. Very few would have given them a chance to finish in a Europa League spot this term, let alone a Champions League place. However, they could move up to fourth with a victory on the road on Friday evening.
Maintaining the form that they have shown throughout the season will be the biggest test for Köln. They would have been pleased to get back to winning ways last weekend after failing to win in two. Köln managed to get a 1-0 win over Freiburg last time out, with Anthony Modeste scoring the all-important winner in the first half.
FC Köln have a reasonable record in this fixture, as they are unbeaten in three against Leipzig. However, their only win during that run came at home last season, as they claimed a 2-1 success. Köln’s last win away at Leipzig came in February 2018. Since then, they have lost once in two visits.
This is a tough looking fixture to predict on Friday evening, as both sides look realistic contenders to finish in the Champions League places. We like the look of Köln’s form against Leipzig though, and would be willing to take a chance on them getting the victory.
