The Netherlands have already booked their spot in the round of 16 at the EUROs, which means that they could make a number of changes for their final group game against North Macedonia on Monday afternoon.
The Netherlands have been in excellent form throughout the EUROs, as they have won both group stage games that they have played. Their second win of the tournament so far came on Thursday evening, as they eased to a 2-0 victory against Austria. The Dutch didn’t need to get out of second gear in Amsterdam in that game, and they took the lead early on through Memphis Depay.
Denzel Dumfries made sure of the victory with 20 minutes remaining with his second goal of the EUROs so far. Dumfries has been one of the stars of the tournament, and there are already a host of club sides that are looking to sign him during the transfer window. The right-back also had a hand in the penalty being awarded, and was a constant menace down the right-hand side throughout the match.
North Macedonia would have certainly got a lot of experience from their first appearance at a major tournament this summer, but their journey looks almost certain to end on Monday afternoon. They were beaten for the second game running on Thursday evening, as Ukraine ran out 2-1 winners.
It was a battling display by Macedonia, and on another day, they could have easily taken three points out of the game. They registered five shots on target, and pushed for an equalizing goal in the final stages after Ezgjan Alioski had pulled one back with half an hour remaining. However, it’s unlikely that they will have the quality to pose a serious threat to the Dutch.
Macedonia and the Netherlands have met on four previous occasions in various competitions. Two of the matches have been won by the Dutch, while Macedonia would have taken confidence from the two draws that they have picked up. However, they have never beaten the Netherlands.
The Netherlands have eased through the group stage to this point, and they are one of a handful of sides that could end the campaign with maximum points. They look to have a great chance of achieving that, and we wouldn’t bet against a win for the Dutch in this fixture.
