The excellent work that Napoli did over the early weeks of the season has quickly come undone, as they have dropped from first to third. They will be looking to put recent disappoints behind them with a home win this weekend against Empoli.
Napoli looked to be the formidable side in Serie A over the first couple of months of the season, but the healthy advantage that they had has been wiped away by the chasing pack, and they are now sitting down in third. Their situation could get even worse this weekend, as defeat at home against Empoli could allow Atalanta the chance to move ahead of them in the league standings.
Napoli have won just one game in their last four fixtures, which is the joint-worst win rate in the league over the past five fixtures. Only the teams in the bottom three places have won fewer games over the same period.
Napoli were beaten for the second time in four fixtures last weekend, as they were beaten by Atalanta. The hosts blew a 2-1 lead in that game, as goals either side of half time by Piotr Zielinski and Dries Mertens had given them the advantage.
Empoli have been in better form than their Italian rivals over the last five games, as they have won twice in their previous three league fixtures, and have lost just once in their last five. They will be hoping to finish in the top half of the standings this season, and could move up to as high as seventh should they claim maximum points in Naples this weekend.
Empoli beat Udinese 3-1 in their last Serie A fixture, with all three goals for the hosts being scored in the second half. Petar Stojanovic, Nedim Bejrami and Andrea Pinamonti scoring the goals.
Empoli beat Napoli for the first time since 2015 in the last fixture between the sides. That 2-1 win ended a five-game wait for a success against their illustrious rivals. Napoli have still won four of the previous five fixtures between the sides in Serie A.
Empoli have certainly settled down to life back in Serie A. However, Napoli need to win this weekend, and will be hoping that their Europa League success against Leicester City sets them up for a good performance on Sunday.
