Mozambique and Malawi are already out of the competition to finish in the top spot in Group D. But, nevertheless, both nations will be hoping to end their campaign on a high with a victory, which would be enough to ensure that they don’t finish at the bottom of the standings.
Group D will go to the wire as Ivory Coast and Cameroon battle it out for top spot. However, two other teams in the group stages finish their campaign on Tuesday, as Mozambique and Malawi round off their fixtures by squaring off, with both sides looking to avoid finishing bottom of the standings in the group.
Malawi have a narrow advantage in that particular battle coming into this fixture, as they are in third with three points. That only win in the group came against Mozambique in the reverse fixture.
However, they have conceded more goals than any other nation in this group, and have scored on just two occasions. They were well beaten once again in their last qualifier. They saw John Banda sent off after just 21 minutes in that game, before Cameroon ran away with the fixture, scoring four times before the end.
Mozambique have at least been more competitive in Group D despite having picked up just one point from a possible 15. Scoring goals has been their biggest issue, as they have hit the back of the net on just one occasion. However, they have conceded eight times, which is a far better defensive record than Malawi.
Mozambique lost their last game against the Ivory Coast. They were given their biggest defeat in qualification in that outing, as the hosts ran out 3-0 winners. However, they will certainly feel that this fixture on Tuesday offers them their best chance of a victory in Group D.
The head to head record highlights how evenly matched these nations are. Malawi have won on ten previous occasions, while Mozambique have picked up eleven wins. Nine previous matches have also ended in draws. Mozambique lost the last match, but they have still won three of the previous five.
Malawi may have won the last meeting between these nations, but we expect Mozambique to recover and gain revenge this week. It isn’t likely to be a fixture packed with goals, but a 1-0 win for the hosts could be the best bet.
