Morocco enjoyed a stellar World Cup by becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals. Their progression has shown no signs of stopping since returning to action, and they will be searching for a second big South American scalp in just five days on Tuesday.
It has been a historic period for the Morocco national team, as they reached the final four of the World Cup in Qatar. However, we don’t expect that performance to be a flash in the pan, as they could be a credible African contender for the next edition of the World Cup in three years time. Before then, they will have to build momentum with major international fixtures coming into sight.
The first of those came over the weekend, as they returned to full-international action with a famous 2-1 win over Brazil. It was their first-ever victory over the famous side, with Abdelhamid Sabiri netting the winning goal with just ten minutes remaining. It was the very least that they deserved for their performance in that match, as they looked to play on the front foot throughout the contest, and responded well after Brazil had equalised.
Peru missed out on a place at the 2022 World Cup by the narrowest of margins, as they were beaten in their playoff by Australia on penalties. Their form remains relatively solid though, as they have landed three wins from their previous six matches. However, they were outclassed on their return to action last week.
Peru was no match for Germany away from home, as they struggled to lay a glove on the EURO 2024 hosts. Germany scored twice inside the opening 33 minutes, and eased to a straightforward success. Peru failed to register a single shot on target in that fixture, and that doesn’t bode well for this showdown.
This will only be the second international fixture between these two nations. The previous meeting came in the 1970 World Cup. On that occasion, Peru secured a straightforward 3-0 win over their African rivals.
Morocco was excellent on their return to action against Brazil, and we would be surprised if they aren’t able to back up that success on Tuesday. We expect the African side to have few issues in registering a 2-0 win against Peru this week.
