The Bundesliga returns this weekend following the winter break. Stuttgart will be hoping that the break hasn’t ruined their momentum, as the German side currently sits third in the standings ahead of their trip to Borussia Monchengladbach.
It will be an interesting battle for Champions League positions in the Bundesliga this term, and Stuttgart are well in the mix to cause a shock outcome in the top four. The German side come into the restart sitting third in the standings after winning eleven of their opening 16 matches this term. However, they will likely need to be more difficult to beat in the second half of the campaign.
Stuttgart at least come into the restart in solid form after winning three of their last five matches, suffering just one defeat over that period. Their most recent outing in the competition came on December 20, as they landed a 3-0 home win against Augsburg. Serhou Guirassy was among the scorers in that success, while Deniz Undav and Chris Fuhrch also found the back of the net.
The second half of the season will be crucial for Borussia Monchengladbach, as they look to avoid getting dragged into a battle at the wrong end of the standings. They come into this weekend sitting 12th in the standings, but they are currently just seven points clear of the bottom three places in the standings.
Their form would be a cause for concern this weekend, as Gladbach have won just once in their last five, and they have fallen to defeats in two of their last three matches in the competition. Their most recent defeat was suffered in dramatic fashion, as they conceded twice in second half injury time against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Stuttgart has a strong record against Gladbach in the Bundesliga after winning two of the previous three. Meanwhile, Gladbach has recorded just one win in their last six league matches against their rivals this weekend. However, Stuttgart have won on just one from three visits to Borussia Park.
Stuttgart enjoyed a very strong first half to the Bundesliga season, but they will need to maintain that form if they are to finish in a Champions League spot this season. This could be a good fixture to resume their campaign, and we could see them recording a 2-1 win on the road.
