Marseille are looking very strong on Ligue 1 this season, and will be looking to end the calendar year with a final victory to close the gap on current league leaders, PSG. Reims will be keen for the points to move further clear of the drop zone.
It has been a fine start to the 2021-22 season for Marseille, as they are looking like a side that are more than capable of finishing in a Champions League spot this term. The French giants are currently sitting second, but are 13 points behind PSG, who currently lead the way. A league challenge looks extremely unlikely, but a finish in the top three would certainly highlight a strong season.
Many of the Marseille problems so far this season have come at home, as they have lost two of the three games this season at home. They have also conceded four more goals in home fixtures, and collected one fewer victory. Marseille have also won just once in their last three home games, with that success coming against Troyes. They were beaten in their last home game at the start of December, as they were beaten 2-1 by Brest. However, they bounced back with a 2-0 road success against Strasbourg a couple of weeks ago.
Reims already have a comfortable cushion over the relegation places this term, as they are seven clear of 18th placed Metz. Recent form has also been strong by the travelling side this week, as they have won three times in their previous four games.
Their latest win in the league came at home against St Etienne, as they won 2-0 on December 11th. El Bilal Toure opened the scoring from the spot, before Nathanael Mbuku doubled the lead with just a minute of the 90 remaining.
Reims have won two of the previous four fixtures that they have played against Marseille, which includes the double that they achieved in the 2019-20 season. They held Marseille away from home last season, before losing the return fixture in Reims 3-1.
Home form has been a slight concern for Marseille this season, and must be something that is addressed in the second half of the season. Reims are ticking along nicely in the league at present, and we could see them taking something from this fixture on Wednesday. A 1-1 draw would be our pick.
