Marseille were the big winners in the midweek round of fixtures, as they have climbed to second in the standings. They will be looking to consolidate their place in the Champions League places this weekend with a victory against an in-form Brest.
Marseille enjoyed a fine midweek round of fixtures in France, as they were able to pounce on dropped points by the teams around them to climb up to second in the standings. That means that they are now the closest challengers to PSG in Ligue 1, but a 12-point gap already looks to be a difficult bridge to close. However, a Champions League place this term would be an excellent result for them.
They are certainly the in-form side of the Champions League chasing sides, as they have won three of their last four games. Their most recent win came in midweek, as they recorded back to back victories in Ligue 1 with a success against Nantes.
Marseille never really looked in danger of dropping points in that fixture, as they played against ten men for the best part of an hour. Gerson had put the visitors ahead before Nicolas Pallois was sent off.
It won’t be an easy fixture for Marseille this weekend though, as they come up against the in-form side in Ligue 1. Brest have been excellent in recent weeks, as they have won their last five games. Before that run of fixtures, they were winless in eleven, and struggling towards the bottom of the standings with just six points.
Their fifth straight win came during the midweek round of fixtures, as Brest overcame St Etienne. Romain Faivre scored the winning goal in the match just after the hour mark from the penalty spot.
Marseille have a fine recent record against Brest, as they have won each of the last five meetings between the sides. They scored three goals against their opponents in each of the two fixtures last season, and they won this exact fixture 3-1 in March. Brest last recorded a victory against Marseille in February 2012.
Brest have the best form in Ligue 1 at present, but we can’t see them claiming a sixth straight win in this big game on the road. Marseille should be the pick to get the win, as they consolidate their place in the Champions League spots.
