It has been a rocky start to the new Bundesliga season for Mainz, as they currently sit in one of the two automatic relegation spots in the German top-flight. They have picked up just a point from their opening three matches this term, and they have scored just twice across their opening three matches. They certainly have defensive issues to address, as they have allowed nine goals so far this term. 

Mainz come into this fixture after suffering a second defeat of the season before the international break. They were outclassed from start to finish in that fixture, as they fell to a heavy 4-0 loss against Werder Bremen. Five of those were netted in their most recent match before the international break against Freiburg. Stuttgart were excellent in that home fixture, with both Chris Fuhrich and Serhou Guirassy netting two apiece. The other goal in the comfortable win was scored by Enzo Millot.
