Few would have expected a title challenge in France’s Ligue 1 this season, but that is exactly what we have. PSG’s dominance in the league could be coming to an end, and the side at the top of the standings will be in action this weekend at home to Strasbourg.
Lille have caught everyone unaware this season, as they have set a fast pace at the top of the French league. They have lost just twice all season, and that has opened up a three point lead over Lyon, and a four point advantage over PSG. They have managed to maintain their form under the pressure by both of the elite clubs over recent weeks, as they have won five of their last six. Most importantly, they haven’t lost during this run of games. Their defensive record is what separates them from the title challengers, as they have the best record in the league. Lille managed to stay top of the league by picking up a dominant win against Lorient last weekend. Jose Fonte, Nanitamo Ikone and Domagoj Bradaric all scored goals in the win.
Strasbourg find themselves at the wrong end of the Ligue 1 table, as they are in 15th place. However, they have a pretty strong advantage in the battle to avoid relegation this season, as they have a six point head start. Their form also isn’t what you would expect from a side fighting against relegation, as they have lost just two of their previous six. They come into this fixture against Lille having gone two unbeaten. However, they were held last time out, as they could only pick up a 0-0 draw against Angers.
Lille have been dominant in fixtures between these two sides, as they have picked up wins in each of the last three games. They have scored seven goals in these fixtures. Meanwhile, Strasbourg’s last league win against Lille came back in August 2017. However, they did beat Lille in a cup fixture back in 2018.
Lille have been in excellent form this season, and they look good value to keep up the pace that they have set so far this season. They should have the quality needed to get three points against Strasbourg on Sunday evening.
