The early action in France’s Ligue 1 on Sunday will see Lille look to get their league campaign back on track when they host Lorient. The visitors will also be searching for a response after suffering three straight defeats to drop into the bottom two spots.
It was a testing period of the season for Lille before the winter break, as the French side went three matches without a victory. That run of results saw Lille drop out of the Champions League spots, and they now sit fifth overall in the standings. However, a return to form this weekend could see them move back to within two points of the top three spots.
Lille were beaten 2-1 by Strasbourg in their last Ligue 1 match before the winter break, but they came back into form in stunning fashion in the French Cup over the weekend. The Ligue 1 giants scored a staggering 12 goals in a 12-0 success against Golden Lion on Saturday to book their spot in the next round of the competition. However, this will be a much tougher challenge on Sunday.
It hasn’t been the season that Lorient would have been expecting to this point, as they have been struggling for points at the wrong end of the Ligue 1 standings. They come into this weekend sitting second-bottom in the standings after winning just twice across their opening 17 matches in the league this term. In fact, even a victory on Sunday wouldn’t move them out of the bottom three.
Lorient’s recent form has also been a concern, as they have lost each of their last three in the league. No side has conceded more goals than the visitors this term, but their 21 goals is the highest of any side in the bottom eight of the standings.
Lorient have a fine recent record against Lille, evident from the fact that they have won three of the last five. However, all their wins over that period have been secured at home. Lille have won each of their last three home matches against their rivals.
Lille’s attacking players bounced back to form in last weekend’s French Cup win, and that could be damning for Lorient this weekend. Therefore, we fully expect the home side to secure a straightforward home win on Sunday against Lorient.
