The competitive action on the schedule continues this week for Bayer Leverkusen as they face a stern test in the quarterfinal stage of the DFB Pokal. The German giants continue to chase multiple honours this term, but they will need to be at their very best to earn a spot in the last four when Stuttgart are the visitors to BayArena.
It has been a memorable season to this point for Bayer Leverkusen, but the second half of the campaign will cement how successful this season will be for Xabi Alonso and his side. Leverkusen remain in the hunt for three major trophies this term, and they could reach the final four of the DFB Pokal with a success over Stuttgart on Tuesday.
The German side a chase a first ever league-cup double in Germany, but they have previously won the DFB Pokal on one previous occasion. That success came back in 1992-93. However, they have lost in three finals since that success, most recently in 2019-20. A huge match against Bayern Munich comes on Saturday, but that must not be a distraction this week.
Stuttgart won’t come into this showdown with much fear, as they are also enjoying an excellent campaign in Germany this term. They currently sit third in the standings, and they have picked up victories in each of their last two matches in the Bundesliga.
The German side has experienced huge success in this competition throughout their history, most recently winning the tournament in 1996-97. That was their third win in the DFB Pokal. Since that success, they have reached the final on two further occasions, most recently losing in the 2012-13 final against Bayern Munich.
The last two matches between these sides have ended in draws, but Leverkusen have landed victories in four of the last six. Leverkusen were also 2-1 winners in the last clash between the sides in the DFB Pokal in February 2020.
This should be an exciting clash in the DFB Pokal this week, as both Leverkusen and Stuttgart are enjoying memorable domestic campaigns. However, it is hard to overlook the success that the home side have achieved across all competitions this term, and we expect them to edge out Stuttgart in a high-scoring affair at BayArena.
