Two German sides that currently occupy European places in the Bundesliga will meet in the league on Saturday, as Mainz travel to the BayArena to take on Bayer Leverkusen.
Bayer Leverkusen will be a prominent pick among gamblers to finish in a European place this season, as they have shown over the early weeks of the season that they have the quality required at both ends of the field. Bayer were handed a first defeat of the new season a couple of weeks ago, as they went down 4-3 to Borussia Dortmund. However, they showed their character last weekend by bouncing back with an impressive 3-1 victory away from home against Stuttgart. It was an excellent first half showing by Leverkusen, as they went 2-0 ahead after just 20 minutes. Robert Andrich opened the scoring, before Patrik Schick doubled the lead. However, a red card to the first scorer threatened to undone all their early work. Leverkusen were able to extend their advantage in the second period to make sure of the points, as Florian Wirtz continued his decent start to the season.
The visitors this weekend have been one of the surprise packages over the early weeks of the season, but they will come up against more talented opposition over the coming weeks. Mainz have lost just once in their first five fixtures this season, but have been in fine form over recent weeks. They have picked up seven points from a possible nine in their last three games, and would have likely been disappointed that they were able to get the win last weekend against Freiburg. Despite trying to make the breakthrough in that fixture, Mainz eventually needed to settle for a 0-0 draw at the MEWA Arena.
Mainz have a terrible record against Leverkusen, as they haven’t beaten their opponents this weekend since September 2017. That is a run that stretches seven games, and Bayer have won six times during that period. However, the most recent fixture between the sides ended in a 2-2 draw in February.
Mainz have started the season well, but this will be a bigger challenge than they have faced thus far. Therefore, it would be wise to stick with the home side to get the win, but it will be a 1-0 or 2-1 scoreline.
