It has been a captivating season in the Bundesliga this year. The title race is wide open, with four teams all in contention for the top prize in German football. Bayern Munich holds the advantage at present, but Borussia Dortmund could go level on points with the Bavarian club this weekend.
Borussia Dortmund are one the most talked about clubs in world football at this moment in time. Much of that has been down to the impact made by Erling Haaland. The teenage sensation was one of the most admired strikers in world football during the January transfer window, and the start to his career in Dortmund has been mesmerizing. He has already scored seven goals in three games for his new club, and he is averaging a goal every 19 minutes.
The relationship that he has already built up with Jadon Sancho has put Dortmund right back into this title race. Since his arrival, they have won all three of their games. During that time, they have also scored 15 goals, which means they are averaging five goals per game. Their latest win in the Bundesliga came against Union Berlin, and they won 5-0. Haaland scored twice, while there were also goals for Sancho, Marco Reus and Axel Witsel.
As for Bayer Leverkusen, their aim for the season will be getting back into the Champions League. They are five points behind Borussia Monchengladbach at present. That gap could have been slimmer if Leverkusen wouldn’t have been condemned to defeat in their last outing in the Bundesliga. That defeat brought an end to their three-match winning run.
That defeat last time out came away from home against Hoffenheim. Moussa Diaby had put Leverkusen ahead in the game before it was turned on its head by Andrej Kramaric and Robert Skov. Kerem Demirbay saw red late in the game for Leverkusen, which will be a big miss for Bayer against Dortmund.
The two sides have met on 28 occasions in the past. Dortmund holds the advantage as they have won on 14 occasions, while Bayer have recorded seven wins. There have also been seven draws between the two sides. Dortmund average 1.9 goals per fixture, while Leverkusen average 1.1. The meeting earlier in the season was an emphatic 4-0 win for Dortmund.
Kerem Demirbay will be missing as he serves his one-match suspension. Meanwhile, Paulinho and Charles Aranguiz will also be missing.
Raphael Guerreiro and Thomas Delaney will be the only injury concerns for Dortmund.
Dortmund’s recent form has been staggering, and for that reason, it is difficult to see past them for this fixture. Punters will be expecting another Haaland goal in a comfortable Dortmund win.
Tip: Erling Haaland to score and Dortmund to win.
