Carlo Ancelotti’s second spell in charge at Real Madrid got off to the best possible start on the opening day of the 2021-22 season. Real claimed three points to send them top of the standings, while Levante are still searching for their first win of the season.
Real Madrid looked to be the standout team on the opening day of the new La Liga season, as they bossed their opening fixture against Alaves. There is confusion centred around the team that will compete for the title this season, but Real put down their marker very early on. Karim Benzema continued to show why he is among the leading players in the world of football, as he scored two excellently taken goals in the second half. Nacho added another goal for the Spanish giants, before Vinicius Jr completed the scoring in the 92nd minute. Real dominated the possession in the fixture, and registered seven shots on target. Ancelotti will be hoping his side can kick on in the second week of the new Spanish season.
Levante could have counted themselves very unlucky not to have started the new season with three points themselves. They were made to pay on the opening day against Cadiz, as they switched off before the end of the match. They were excellent for 90 minutes, but Cadiz managed to level the scores with virtually the last kick of the game. It looked as though they were going to get a 1-0 win to start the season for large sections, as they opened the scoring after 39 minutes when Jose Luis Morales put them ahead. But, they were forced deeper and deeper in the closing moments, and allowed Cadiz the chance to snatch a point in their home opener.
One of Levante’s six wins against Real Madrid came last season, as they beat the 2020-21 runners-up 2-1 away from home. That was their second win in three games against the Spanish giants. However, Real won this fixture away from home against Levante last season 2-1, with a goal being scored in each half.
Levante have a decent record against Real over recent seasons. However, there were defensive issues for the club in their opener, and Real could take advantage of those this weekend. It should be a second straight win for Ancelotti’s side.
