There is an exciting clash in the French Cup on Sunday evening, as two of the leading sides to potentially win the competition clash. Both Monaco and Lens were beaten in their latest Ligue 1 fixtures, and will be looking to bounce back with a success in the French Cup.
Monaco will be considered as one of the outstanding chances to win the French Cup this season, and have shown glimpses of their very best form in recent weeks. However, they were dealt a blow in their mission to finish in a Champions League position last weekend, as they three-game unbeaten run was brought to an end.
Monaco were beaten in a pulsating match-up against Montpellier, eventually ending up on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline. However, they have eased through the French Cup to this point, and eased through to this stage with a 3-1 success on the road against Quevilly-Rouen on January 2nd.
Kevin Volland scored a brace in that win, while Wissam Ben Yedder also found the net. Monaco last won the French Cup back in the 1990-91 season, but have been losing finalists twice since 2009.
Lens have home advantage for this round of 16 clash in the French Cup, as they look to win the competition for the very first time in their history. They have lost in the final of the French Cup on three previous occasions; most recently in the 1997-98 season.
Lens are a place below Monaco in the Ligue 1 standings, and were beaten in their latest fixture by Marseille. They reached this stage of the competition after seeing off Lille in the round of 32. They needed a penalty shootout to overcome the French champions after a 2-2 draw was played out in regular time.
Lens have a fine recent record against Monaco, as they are unbeaten in three and have won twice during that run. However, both victories that they have recorded have come away from home. Monaco have won both fixtures between the sides in the French Cup since 2010.
This is the hardest game of the round to predict, as both sides have excellent chances. However, we will take a chance on Monaco, as they have the extra threat in the final third that could be pivotal this weekend.
