A Midlands derby will take centre stage in the Premier League on Monday evening, as both Leicester City and Aston Villa will be looking for the three points that could increase their chances of achieving their goals for the season. But, who will get the win?
At one point this season, Leicester were considered the closest title challengers to Liverpool. However, their form over the past five games has been terrible, and it has left them looking over their shoulder anxiously. Brendan Rodgers’ side are now just eight points clear of fifth-placed Manchester United, while Chelsea are just four points behind them. Over their last five games, Leicester have lost twice and drawn twice. That includes back-to-back defeats in their last two outings in the Premier League.
Those two defeats came against Manchester City and Norwich City. However, they managed to get through to the quarterfinal of the FA Cup in mid-week with a victory over Birmingham City in another Midlands derby. The only goal in the game was scored by Ricardo Pereira with eight minutes remaining. It was far from a pulsating performance, and fans will be hoping that the Foxes haven’t ran out of steam.
Aston Villa endured a miserable weekend last time out as they were beaten in the Carabao Cup final by Manchester City. To make matters worse for them, they also find themselves in the relegation places now after results went against them on the previous matchday. They are two points from safety at present, but a win here would do wonders for their survival hopes. Villa didn’t play badly in that cup final against City, but they were left with too much to do after falling 2-0 behind. Mbwana Samatta did put a goal back for the Villa, but they were unable to get the equalizing goal. Villa will take confidence from their victory over Leicester in January going into this fixture.
Leicester holds the advantage over the Villa in the head to head record as they have won on 42 occasions. Villa have won 33 times, and there have been 25 draws. The Foxes won the last Premier League meeting between the sides 4-1, while Villa beat Leicester in the Carabao Cup semi-final in January.
Jamie Vardy is a doubt for the Foxes, while Daniel Amartey will also be missing.
Wesley and Tom Heaton are out for the season, but John McGinn isn’t far away from a return.
Leicester’s form means that this game is more interesting. Villa are scrapping for points at the bottom of the league, and a win here would be huge for their chances. However, both teams to score market could be the safest bet.
Tip: Both teams to score.
