There is a massive game in Serie A this weekend as two of the sides that will be representing the Italian league in the Champions League this season will go head to head. But, will Lazio be able to get back to winning ways?
It was a disappointing round of mid-week fixtures for Lazio, as they were handed a thumping loss at home by Atalanta. Lazio’s form since games have moved behind closed doors has been indifferent, which could prove to be a major issue for them this season as the season progresses. That was once again on display against Atalanta, as they had no response for their attacking threat posed by the visiting side.
Atalanta went ahead after ten minutes through Robin Gosens, before Hans Hateboer and Alejandro Dario Gomez adding two more goals before the half-time break. Lazio pulled one back through Felipe Caicedo, but Atalanta were able to restore their three-goal lead when Gomez scored his second of the game with half an hour remaining. Simeone Inzaghi will be hoping that there is a reponse from his side this weekend.
Inter Milan made it two wins on the bounce to start the new season in mid-week as they beat Benevento 5-2 away from home. Romelu Lukaku scored a first-half brace for the travelling side, while Roberto Gagliardini also found the net. Gianluca Caprari pulled one back after 34 minutes, but Achraf Hakimi restored Inter’s advantage. Lautaro Martinez got in on the act in the second half to make it 5-1, before Caprari scored another consolation goal for the home side. Inter will be aware that they will need to continue their momentum to ensure that they put the pressure on Juventus throughout the season.
Lazio have won two of the past three against Inter, but they have only won one of the past four home fixtures against this weekend’s opponents. Lazio won the last meeting between the teams, while Inter won the last time that these two sides met at the San Siro.
This is always a huge fixture in the Serie A season, and there will be a lot of interest in how Lazio respond to their defeat in mid-week. However, Inter have been excellent in their opening two games and they will make it three wins on the bounce here.
