There will rare Europa Conference League action taking place on Tuesday evening, as the in-form Lazio look to continue their hunt for European silverware. AZ Alkmaar will be aware how crucial this opening leg will be, but whether they can claim anything again the in-form Italians remains to be seen.
It has been an excellent period of the season for Lazio, as they have taken a firm hold on a Champions League spot in the Serie A standings. However, a piece of silverware would rank highly on the list of goals for Maurizio Sarri and his side this term, and the Europa Conference League could present them with their best opportunity to achieve that.
Lazio overcome a stern challenge in the playoff round, as they narrowly edged past the challenge posed of them by Cluj. They eventually secured a 1-0 win on aggregate, with their 1-0 success being achieved at the Stadio Olimpico. Lazio come into this match in excellent recent form, as they have gone five without conceding across all competitions, and were 1-0 winners in their most recent outing against Napoli.
There was no need for a playoff tie for AZ Alkmaar, as they cruised through to the next stage of the Europa Conference League after finishing top of the Group E standings before Christmas. They secured five wins from six matches, which saw them finish five points clear at the top of the standings. Their defensive record in the group stage was strong, as they allowed just six goals.
AZ also come into this fixture in strong recent form, as they have picked up back-to-back wins in their latest two matches in the Eredivisie. Their most recent win was a 1-0 success on the road against Vitesse. However, this will be a completely different challenge to the ones that they have faced in Europe to this point.
This will be the first ever competitive meeting between these two sides in a European competition. The second meeting will take place next week, as the return fixture is set for March 16.
Lazio’s recent form bodes very well for their chances of victory in this fixture on Tuesday. We expect the Italian side to take a lead into the second leg, but under 2.5 goals may be the most interesting betting angle this week.
