The Champions League last 16 continues this week, and there will be a significant match in Portugal, as Benfica look to reach the quarterfinals. Club Brugge will have a big test to overcome, as they trail 2-0 from the first leg a few weeks ago.
Champions League Preview
All the cards look to be stacked in Benfica’s favour ahead of the crucial second leg in the round of 16 in the Champions League this week. The Portuguese giants were excellent in the opening leg against Brugge, as they picked up a comfortable 2-0 win on the road. Benfica were extremely professional in the opening leg between the sides, with both of their goals being netted in the second half.
The Portuguese side went ahead six minutes into the second half, as Joao Mario opened the scoring from the penalty spot. Club Brugge weren’t able to see out the game in the final stages, and gifted Benfica a second goal with just two minutes remaining, as David Neres scored the crucial second on the nigh for the Portuguese visitors.
Most pleasing was Benfica’s away performance, as they allowed Brugge to have just a single shot on target in the 90 minutes. The task ahead for the Belgian side is now huge, as only one previous team has managed to come back from a 2-0 home leg defeat in Champions League history. Brugge has also lost five of their previous seven matches on the road in European competition. Although, one of their wins on the road was picked up in Portugal earlier in the season, as they landed a 4-0 win against Porto.
Benfica holds the better pedigree at this stage of the competition, and they will be aiming for a second consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals. They will also be looking to record a fourth win on the bounce in the Champions League for the first time since 1990.
Benfica vs Club Brugge Head to Head
The last meeting between the sides saw Benfica run out comfortable 2-0 winners. The Portuguese side has not lost in ten previous home matches against teams from Belgian, and they have won each of their last six.
Benfica vs Club Brugge Prediction
Brugge will need to play much better than two weeks ago to stand any chance. However, we struggle to see past the hosts on Tuesday. We expect Benfica to cruise through to the next round of the competition, and the handicap market could offer the best avenue for value.
