Khalid Aucho, who captained the Uganda Cranes, has retired from international football. The midfielder announced his decision in an official statement on Monday, 12 October 2026, ending a career of 77 caps and three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, Chimpreports reported.
A Career Built on the Cranes Shirt
Aucho's international journey lasted 13 years, starting with his debut on Saturday 30 November 2013. In his statement, he called wearing the black, yellow and red jersey the greatest privilege of his life, and he described captaining his country as the ultimate honour.
He picked out Uganda's return to the AFCON finals in 2017, ending a 39-year absence, as one of the highlights.
Aucho also looked back to his childhood, saying, as Chimpreports reported, that his dream of playing for Uganda took shape while he worked at Bugembe Market. He thanked FUFA, administrators, coaches and teammates, and singled out the late former Cranes coach Fred Kajoba for his belief and guidance.
The Investigator News reported that he also named coaches Milutin Sredojević, Sébastien Desabre, Jonathan McKinstry and Paul Put as important to his development. He thanked supporters too, especially those who backed the team at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, and across the country.
Naturalisation Talk Around the Announcement
The retirement came amid reports of a major FUFA recruitment drive. The Investigator News reported that FUFA president Moses Magogo announced on Monday, 5 October 2026, that FUFA was in the final stages of recruiting more than 20 foreign-born players through a naturalisation programme.
The programme is backed by President Yoweri Museveni, with funding of Shs1.5 billion, about $400,000, approved by the government. The first group of recruits has reportedly played in Uganda's qualifier against Libya at Hoima City Stadium and the friendlies against DR Congo in Johannesburg.
Aucho's statement did not directly accuse Magogo, FUFA or the government of forcing him out. The Investigator News cited unnamed sources close to the player who said Ugandan-born players feel betrayed and that several established players, including Salim Magoola, Joseph Ochaya, Timothy Denis Awany and Aziz Kayondo, are contemplating retirement. Those claims are unconfirmed, and the outlet noted that none of the players has announced a retirement.
A New Generation to Take Over
Aucho said it was time for a new generation to step forward and write their own history, and that he would support them as one of Uganda's biggest fans. He added that his commitment to Ugandan football remains unchanged. Also, Uganda Cranes posted on X:
