The new Serie A season gets underway this weekend, and the defending champions begin the defence of their title with a home fixture against Sampdoria. But, will the Old Lady be able to get off to a strong start?
Maurizio Sarri’s reign at Juventus came to a disappointing end at the end of last season, as the Italian was fired shortly after the Old Lady were knocked out of the Champions League by Lyon. Sarri was swiftly replaced by Andrea Pirlo, who will be looking to deliver a tenth straight Serie A title. There has been a subtle adjustment within the team over the summer, as they have began to look towards the future. Both Miralem Pjanic and Blaise Matuidi have departed the club, and Juventus have brought in 23-year-old Artur from Barcelona and 22-year-old Weston McKennie from Schalke.
As is the case with every season, Juventus will be considered the huge favourites to win the Serie A title this season, but they will need to find their consistency early. The Old Lady won the league by just one point last season, and Pirlo will be keen to avoid the disappointment of being the manager that let go of the domestic title.
Sampdoria will be hoping for a better season this term, as they were forced to settle for a 15th placed finish in 2019-20. Claudio Ranieri will be realistic about their chances, as his side come into the new season having lost four of their past five games in Serie A. The club have attempted to give Ranieri better options around the field, as they have Maya Yoshida and Lorenzo Tonelli on loan from Southampton and Napoli respectively. However, it could be a long season ahead for Sampdoria.
Juventus have won the last two against Sampdoria. However, the minnows have enjoyed success against the Old Lady, as they have won two games in six. However, Juventus have won the last three at home, and have scored at least two goals in all of these games.
The Old Lady will be keen to start the new season strongly to ensure that there is no hangover from their Champions League departure. Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to get off the mark in this game, and it’s likely that he will score in a 3-0 home win.
