Inter Milan v Atalanta Prediction: Serie A Match on 25.09.2021

The Italian Serie A returns to our screens this weekend and there are plenty of matches worth a watch. The best games will be shown live on television to a global audience as the top tier of Italian football continues to thrive worldwide. The game that caught the eye of our football content writers pairs Inter Milan with Atalanta on Saturday from 17:00 GMT. With both sides hopeful of challenging for the league title this season, this is an excellent chance for them to lay down an early marker and claim all three points against a rival. Which side will achieve that?

Inter Milan finished last season as surprise champions of Serie A, ending the near-decade-long dominance of Juventus. They were rather fortunate to secure a place in the top four following a dreadful campaign. Some believe that was a fluke result, and Juve will battle back, but the Old Lady has started slow, and Inter Milan will be eager to defend their honour. If they are to make it two in a row, they must ensure their home stadium is a fortress, a place to be feared by visiting opponents.

Inter Milan and Atalanta met twice last season, and there was very little between the pair on each occasion. Last November, they produced a 1-1 draw before Milan battled to a narrow 1-0 victory when last hosting Atalanta. Milan Skriniar scored the winning goal that day on 54 minutes. Another competitive 90 minutes of play is expected. It’s maybe worth noting that Atalanta hasn’t beaten Inter Milan in six attempts, with that drought stretching back almost three years.

Milan picked up where they left off

Inter Milan was fantastic last season, and they have picked up where they left off in this campaign, hitting the front early and looking every bit a champion that is good enough to defend their title. They started the week in pole position with 10 points collected from a possible dozen after four games played. Their form in that time reads three wins against one draw, and they are level with derby rivals AC Milan who also have 10 points. Napoli, Roma and Fiorentina are poised to strike with nine points against their name, and we could be set for a fiercely competitive season.

Inter Milan picked up that spare draw when playing out a 2-2 finish at Sampdoria. It was a game they were expected to win but had to settle for a share of the spoils despite all four goals being scored inside 47 minutes that day. Milan had chances to nick the points near the end, but a lack of composure in the attacking areas of the field ended up costing them their 100% record for the season. It was a tough one to take, having leaked two goals that were certainly avoidable.

Champions are measured on how they bounce back from off days, and Inter Milan certainly got back on track in some style. They dismantled Bologna when last playing at home, running riot and winning 6-1. In a stunning show of strength, the champions took the lead inside six minutes thanks to a goal from Martinez and had wrapped things up by the interval. A real confidence booster for the club. They will now aim to build on that with another win.

Atalanta are off the early pace

Atalanta has performed admirably in recent Serie A seasons and was amongst the early favourites with pundits to challenge for the league trophy this term. A top-four finish and place in next season’s Champions League have become the least followers of Atalanta expect when making their predictions, but the team has a long way to go if they are to live up to those expectations. The visitors make this trip on the back of an unconvincing run of form and are well off the pace set by their opponents as a result of that inconsistency.

The away team started the week in eighth place with their record for the season, reading two wins and one draw against one defeat. The form of their last three games reads draw, lose, win, and that’s not the kind of form you would expect from a team that is hoping to challenge for the league title, even at this early stage of proceedings. Everyone connected to the club, from the players through to the fans, will be desperate to see Atalanta put together a winning run. What better place to start than at the home of the champions.

The visitors did make a welcome return to winning ways last time after taking just one point from a possible six. They were last seen in action beating Salernitana 1-0 on the road. That was a match they were expected to win, and they got the job done, but the victors were made to work hard for their points, and it was a less than convincing performance.

Inter Milan v Atalanta prediction

This is a meeting of two teams who are good enough to challenge for the title this season, but both have had very different starts to the campaign. Everything is going right for the champions at present, and they enter this match with the confidence that comes with an unbeaten run as well as holding the home advantage. If they can live up to their recent form and collect another win in this match, it would help strengthen their push or the title.

Atalanta is a squad filled with talent and one good enough to secure another top-four finish in Serie A, regardless of the result of this game. They have started this season poorly, but an away win over Milan would inject new belief and confidence into the ranks. That’s easier said than done, but past meetings between Atalanta and Inter Milan have been close, and this renewal could follow that trend.
