Two sides that will still be hopeful of finishing in the Europa League places will do battle on Wednesday evening, with the winners ending the round of fixtures above their opponent. Any chance of either side finishing in the top six will depend on a win in this fixture, which means a draw will be a result that neither side are hoping for.
Hoffenheim’s chances of finishing in the Europa League place are hanging by a thread heading into this round of fixtures, as their form over recent weeks has been terrible. They haven’t won in six, and have only picked up three points in that space of time. That run of form has meant that they are now three points behind Wolfsburg in sixth spot. They are still within striking distance but maintaining a run of consistent victories is something that they have struggled with all season.
They have been a little better since the restart as they have lost once and drawn once. That draw came last time out against bottom-placed Paderborn. The result was an indicator of how far Hoffenheim have let their standards slip, as they were outplayed by the side doomed for the drop. However, they went ahead after four minutes through Robert Skov. They were unable to hold onto this lead, as Dennis Srbeny scored an equaliser for five minutes later. This will be a bigger challenge, but the form wouldn’t indicate that they will be able to get the win.
On the other hand, FC Köln have been in decent form, and out of the two sides in action on Wednesday, they would be the one with the better chance of achieving a Europa League finish. They have lost just once over their previous six, with three wins also coming in this time. However, they haven’t won since the restart and were hugely fortunate to have escaped their local derby with a point last time out. Dusseldorf went into a 2-0 lead in that fixture, but FC Köln were able to rescue a point in the final five minutes as Anthony Modeste and Jhon Cordoba scored within three minutes of each other.
The overall record between these sides would indicate that they are very evenly matched. Hoffenheim hold the narrow advantage having won on eight occasions, while FC Köln have won seven times. There have also been six draws between the sides. Hoffenheim have won the last three meetings, and have also won four of the previous five.
Neither side have been in progressive form since the Bundesliga restarted, which means the head to head record is the only way to get a grasp on which side may win this game. Hoffenheim’s three successive wins are hard to ignore, which means the preference would be for the home side to get a vital three points.
