The Bundesliga returns on Friday evening, as FC Köln travel to Hoffenheim looking for a second straight victory. Meanwhile, the hosts will be looking to bounce back from defeat before the international break.
It has been a fine start to the new season for FC Köln, as they have put last season’s struggles firmly behind them. They currently sit sixth in the league standings, and victory on Friday could see them go into the top four of the table.
It has been an excellent turnaround by Köln, as they narrowly avoided relegation to the second tier at the end of last season. However, they have been much more resilient this season, and have lost just once in six fixtures. They have picked up three wins and three draws to this point, and have scored 13 goals.
Defensively there are certainly issues to iron out, as they have allowed nine goals, but the signs are good for the season ahead. Köln will be looking for a second win on the bounce this weekend after seeing off Furth before the international break. Ellyes Skhiri scored twice in that victory.
It has been a slightly slower start to the new season for Hoffenheim, as they are currently in the bottom half of the league standings. They have picked up just two wins from the seven games that have been played, and have already been beaten on three occasions.
Two of those defeats have come in their last four league games, which includes the 3-1 defeat that they suffered against Stuttgart before the international break. However, a 3-1 win over Wolfsburg at the end of September is a sign of what this team are capable of doing when they are at their very best.
Hoffenheim hold the overall advantage in this fixture, as they have won eleven times in the previous 24 meetings. Köln have won just seven times in the same period. The recent fixtures since 2017 have been dominated by Hoffenheim, as they have won the last six. Köln’s last victory in this fixture came back in April 2015.
Despite the overall record pointing towards a win for Hoffenheim, we believe that it will be the away side that end their terrible record. Köln have been in fine form at the start of the season, and they can claim a fourth win in eight this weekend.
