Real Madrid will be hoping to reclaim the La Liga title this season, and the next month or so could be crucial to their chances of achieving that. They begin their winter campaign with an away game against Granada.
It has been a relatively sold start to the season for Real Madrid, as they look to win back the La Liga title that they lost to cross-city rivals Atletico last term. They come into their 13th game of the season in second place in the league standings, but have a game in hand over Real Sociedad.
There is a difference of just one point between the top two in Spain, but Real will also need to contend with the challenges of Sevilla and Atletico, who are the two teams directly below them in the standings.
Real have won three of their last four, and will also be looking for a third straight win in La Liga this weekend. They won for the second game running before the international break, as they beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1 in Madrid. Both Real goals were scored in the first half by Toni Kroos and Karim Benzema.
Granada playing European football is a distant memory nowadays, as they will face a huge challenge to stay in the division this season. That is echoed by their current position in the standings, as they are down in 17th after 12 games have been played.
They are level on points with Elche, who currently occupy 18th, but a win this weekend could see them end the weekend as high as 13th in the standings. Recent form has been relatively good for Granada, as they have lost just once in their last five. They have also won twice during that run of form, but they were beaten in their last fixture by Espanyol.
Real Madrid have won all but one of the fixtures between these sides in La Liga. They have won 15 of the previous 16 meetings, with Granada’s only win coming in this fixture in February 2013. Real have scored 12 goals in the last four meetings between the clubs.
Granada’s record in this fixture doesn’t give them much hope, and we could easily see the travelling side running away with the points. Expect Real to win by at least two goals this weekend.
