Getafe’s situation in La Liga was looking bleak a month ago, but they have shown the fighting spirit that fans would have been hoping. They could potentially move out of the relegation places with a victory this weekend against an Athletic Bilbao side that are winless in their last five.
It looked to be a long road to safety for Getafe just over a month ago, but they now find themselves on the brink of moving outside of the relegation places. They have shown excellent fight in their last five games, as they have picked up two wins and have lost on just one occasion.
Their decent run of form continued last weekend, as they played out a 0-0 draw away from home against Mallorca. It seemed as though Getafe were only more than happy to take a point away from that fixture, as they didn’t register a single shot on target and allowed Mallorca to dictate the pace of the game. However, the point means that they now have ten points, and are just two points away from a place outside the relegation zone.
It has been a miserable run of form for Athletic Bilbao, as they have dropped down the standings very quickly. Their aim will still be to finish in a European place this season, but they will need to swiftly turn around their form to achieve that.
Bilbao are without a win in their last five league fixtures, and have been held to four draws during that run. They are now three points behind Barcelona, and eight off the Champions League spots. Bilbao were held for the second game running in La Liga last weekend by Granada. Luis Maximiano scored an own goal for Granada in the final 15 minutes.
Bilbao won the last fixture between these sides in January, as they ran out commanding 5-1 winners. Before that win, they had gone seven without a win against Getafe. However, five of those games ended in draws, with Getafe winning on just two occasions.
Bilbao’s form has been very underwhelming in recent weeks, and not what you would expect from a team chasing a European place. Getafe will likely see a draw as a decent result in this match, and we expect them to get a point in a 1-1 draw.
