From 2023, the number of clubs in the Champions Hockey League will be reduced by a quarter

On June 9, a meeting of the General Assembly of the Hockey Champions League was held in an online format. The leaders of the league decided to reduce the number of clubs from 32 to 24 from season 2023/2024. The decision was dictated by a desire to increase the prestige of this tournament and increase profits for the clubs.

Due to coronavirus pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding professional sporting events throughout Europe, the Champions League board decided to postpone the start of the 2020/2021 season for one month until October 6. This decision entailed a change in the format of the tournament. Next season, the Champions League will be played in the playoff system.

Last season, the Swedish Frölunda defeated the Czech Hradec Kralove 3-1 in the final of the Champions Hockey League. The club from Sweden won the Champions League for the fourth time in history, having won the trophy in 2016, 2017 and 2019. Once the Frölunda lost in the finals.
